History & Accomplishments

A Snapshot Of Our Past

RDMBA's origins are 30+ years old with the organization starting in the 70's under the umbrella of the Alberta Baseball Association (which in 1986 became the current Baseball Alberta).  Early on, led by players such as Dwayne Lalor and Rob Hamill, Red Deer sent several teams to the Western Championships which at the time were the pinnacle for teams playing under the Alberta Baseball Association.  Some years later, RDMBA changed directions, opting to join Little League where their Senior Division teams were highly successful, winning several league championships.

In 1994, following the Toronto Blue Jays winning successive World Series Championships, baseball registration in Red Deer as elsewhere in Canada hit an all time high with some
600 "future hall of famers" overwhelming the facilities available within Red Deer to such an extent that many practices were routinely held in wide open fields with nary a ball diamond in sight!

Organizationally, RDMBA remained affiliated with Little League except at the Midget AAA level, where there was a return to this elite level of the Red Deer program to the Baseball Alberta fold.  Additionally, RDMBA hosted the Midget National Championships from 1996 to 2000, with the 1996 host Red Deer Midget AAA Braves winning silver at this national championship.  In 2000, RDMBA returned its organization to its original roots, with the entire program affiliating with Baseball Alberta once again.

Life After Red Deer Minor Baseball

For most players, baseball is a summer time sport activity to enjoy with teammates. Little or no thought is given to baseball in later life beyond the possibility of some recreational baseball or even a rousing game of slo-pitch! However, for others, baseball with RDMBA has increasingly been a stepping stone to a further baseball future. For a select few this has meant being drafted by the MLB and include RDMBA alumni such as Brad Moon (Blue Jays), Paul Manning (Yankees) and Jeff McDonald (Mariners).

Other alumni have parlayed their baseball skills and abilities which were learned, developed and refined during their time in our program, to further their education and baseball development via college ball both in Canada and the US. Their baseball skills have helped via scholarships to pay for some or all of their post secondary education. Some past alumni in this category include Dwayne Lalor (Washington State University), Riley Barrett (PBA/San Diego State University), Miki Kawahara (UBC), Brent Lazzoratto (PBA/Lethbridge College), and Matt Fay (PBA/University of Lethbridge).

Still other RDMBA alumni are continuing to pursue academic and athletic excellence through college programs. These include Byron Whitford (PBA/Colby College/University of Arkansas at Little Rock), Jason Chatwood (Colby College/Gonzaga University), Marshall McDonald (Colby College/University of Dayton Ohio), Mike O'dwyer (Minot State University), Denver Wik (Minot State University), Mike Ronnie (Minot State University), Kerry Boon (Minot State University), Dan Jackson (Minot State University), and Jaret Chatwood (Colby College).

Many of those noted above, and other RDMBA alumni continue to play highly competitive baseball including with our two local Senior Men AAA programs, the Stags and the Riggers.
